Raised in the Canadian wilderness

Lodestar began with a simple idea: reaching beautiful, challenging places and sharing the experience.

For years, I’ve traveled to remote and often difficult places through my work in humanitarian settings and my own exploring and adventuring beyond the usual routes. High peaks, backcountry trails, and places that require effort and planning to reach.

The experience of being there is difficult to share. The sensory experience of standing on a high peak, of swimming in a remote backcountry lake, of being the only one on a distant remote trail - are all hard to explain to someone who wasn't there.

Lodestar Backcountry Provisions was created to make those places and those experiences real and shared.

Each product begins in the landscape itself, designed to carry a part of that place and that experience into something you can share, not just observe.

Products Rooted in Place

Each of our sourdough starters begins in the Canadian backcountry.

At every location, a new starter made up of flour and water is placed among the trees to capture wild yeast from the forest air. That culture is then analyzed and cultivated, identifying the wild yeast strains that define that place.

Those same wild yeast strains are used in the development of each batch.

The result is a sourdough starter that is shaped by the forest air and the landscape it came from. These are products that are rooted in place, story, and experience.
